As a result, trade with Britain reduced by about 70%, and it increased with Germany, culminating in 37% of Swedish exports being to Germany alone. In 1879, the solar time 3 degrees west of the Observatory of Stockholm was defined as the national standard time. It was 1 hour and 14 seconds ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), then the world's time Neutrality in WW2. Despite its neutrality, Sweden looked more warily to its eastern border than to the 3rd Reich. Indeed, it allowed the Wehrmacht to use Swedish railways to transport, in June–July 1941, the whole 163rd Infantry Division, along with all its equipment and supplies, from Norway to Finland, to help the Finnish Army. After the surrender of France in and the invasion of the Soviet Union, 1940 proved to be the Darkest hour for Great Britain.

On their retreat from Finland in late 1944 and early 1945, however, the Germans burned and ravaged Finnmark and northern Troms. The Soviet troops who liberated eastern Finnmark in November 1944 withdrew during the summer of 1945.
